The original Federal Café put Ruzafa on the map as Valencia's creative brunch destination, and it remains one of the best all-day cafés in Spain. Australian-inspired with brilliant coffee, smashed avocado, and eggs every way you like them, it draws a cosmopolitan crowd of expats, creatives, and their dogs. The terrace is dog-friendly and the interior tolerates small dogs. The weekend brunch queue is real but worth it. One of those places that defines the neighbourhood.

A quintessential Valencian neighbourhood bar in the heart of El Carmen, the medieval old quarter. Nothing fancy, nothing pretending to be something it isn't. Wooden bar, cold beer, good vermouth, and excellent montaditos. Dogs are entirely expected here — this is a local bar in the truest sense, and locals bring their dogs. The small terrace onto the narrow street is particularly good in the evening when El Carmen comes alive with people walking their dogs between the tapas bars.

The kitchen focuses on seasonal Valencian produce with a contemporary touch, and the natural wine list is one of the best in the old quarter.
