Dénia

The medieval castle crowning the hill, with its ramparts, the Governor's Palace and the archaeological museum set within its walls. Leashed dogs are allowed in the gardens and on the ramparts, but not inside the museum rooms.

The 750-metre limestone massif above the town, a natural park laced with trails through scrubland and cliffs. Leashed dogs are allowed, but the terrain is steep and exposed, so carry water and avoid the hot summer hours.

The rocky shore south of the town, where small coves and rock platforms replace the sand. Quieter and unmarked, several of these coves tolerate leashed dogs, especially out of season, an alternative to the town beaches closed to them in summer.

The fishing and marina harbour, from where the ferries leave for Ibiza and Formentera. The quays and promenade are walked on leash, and dogs are accepted aboard the ferries under the operator's rules, usually crated or muzzled on deck.

On the sandy Les Marines strip north of the town, Dénia sets aside a dog beach where dogs are allowed, including in summer. It is the safest place to let them enjoy the sea when the town beaches are closed to them in high season.

The old centre below the castle, with its lanes and Calle Loreto, the tapas street lined with terraces. It is easy to walk on leash and, in fine weather, many terraces welcome a dog at your feet.
