Athens has been continuously inhabited for over 5,000 years and gave the world democracy, philosophy, and Western drama from its 5th-century BC golden age under Pericles. The Parthenon still crowns the Acropolis above a sprawling modern metropolis of four million, shaped by Ottoman rule, post-1922 refugee waves from Asia Minor, and a post-2004 Olympics urban overhaul. Athens has one of Europe's largest free-roaming dog populations โ the famous Athenian stray, often sterilised, vaccinated, and collar-tagged by the municipality, stands guard at metro stations and archaeological sites. Greek law since 2021 has tightened pet regulation while simultaneously protecting strays.
The archaeological site admits only assistance dogs, but the surrounding peripatetic promenade (Dionysiou Areopagitou pedestrian street) is one of Athens' great dog walks, with direct views up to the Parthenon.
The 15.5-hectare former royal garden behind Parliament accepts dogs on short leash on main paths, but excludes them from the small zoo, duck pond, and playground areas. Best visited before 09:00 in summer for coolness and company.
At 277 m, Athens' highest point is reached on foot via a switchback pine-shaded trail (leashed dogs welcome) or by funicular (pets allowed in carriers only). The summit chapel and panoramic terrace offer 360ยฐ city views.
The oldest neighborhood, wrapped around the Acropolis slope, is an unbeatable leashed walk with white-washed Cycladic-style Anafiotika alleys, bougainvillea, and dozens of pet-friendly tavernas. Very steep โ bring water.
The 21-hectare Renzo Piano-designed park by the sea in Kallithea has a dedicated fenced dog park, cooling canopy corridors, and free cultural programming. The best large green space for active dogs in the city.
The flea-market square and the pedestrian Adrianou street running along the Ancient Agora railings offer layered ruin-views on a leashed walk. Site interiors require tickets and do not admit pets.
