Albufeira is the Algarve's largest beach resort, a cliff-top city of two faces where the cobbled medieval Cidade Velha tumbles down to the fishermen's beach and the busy resort strip stretches east, with year-round dog beaches just outside town and ~300 sunny days a year making it one of southern Europe's most pet-friendly seaside escapes outside the July-August peak. Top spots for pets include the Pine Cliffs clifftop trail between Praia da Falésia and Olhos de Água, Praia da Cova Redonda (year-round dog beach), and the Praia dos Salgados flamingo boardwalk, especially around the Cidade Velha around the Pau da Bandeira viewpoint, the marina promenade, and the Praia da Galé resort coast west of town.

Albufeira, the Algarve's largest beach resort with about 42,000 residents (and roughly 5 million visitors a year), began as a Moorish and then Christian fishing settlement on a limestone cove of Portugal's south coast, dominated until the 1755 Lisbon earthquake by a fortified castle whose fragments still lie in the Cidade Velha. Today the town has two faces: the cobbled Old Town of white-washed houses tumbles down to the Praia dos Pescadores and the Pau da Bandeira viewpoint, while the resort strip of Areias de São João stretches east in high-rise hotels, bars and the late-night Strip on Avenida Sá Carneiro. For travellers with a dog, the Algarve combines ~300 sunny days a year, official year-round dog beaches at Cova Redonda and Barranco das Belharucas, the Pine Cliffs clifftop trail under umbrella pines, and the Praia dos Salgados lagoon reserve with its flamingos. Timing is critical: from 1 May to 30 September dogs are banned from all central beaches (GNR fines up to 120 €) and July-August heat pushes asphalt and sand above 50 °C. April-May and October-November turn Albufeira into one of southern Europe's most rewarding dog-friendly escapes, hotel rates 40-60% below August levels and all beaches reopening to leashed dogs from 1 October.
4 km clifftop trail through umbrella-pine forest between Praia da Falésia and Olhos de Água. Leashed dogs year-round, bright red sandstone cliffs, water fountains at both ends.
Maze of cobbled streets and white-washed houses tumbling down to the fishermen's beach, with the Igreja de São Sebastião and the Pau da Bandeira viewpoint at the top. Leashed dogs welcome everywhere in the public streets.
Small horseshoe cove 15 km west, officially designated as a year-round dog beach by the Lagoa municipality. Leashed dogs allowed all twelve months, wooden boardwalk descent, seasonal beach café.
475-berth marina with candy-coloured buildings by architect Vasco Vieira, 24/7 promenade, dog-friendly terrace restaurants and dolphin-watching boats. Leashed dogs welcome everywhere on the boardwalk year-round.
Coastal lagoon and salt-marsh reserve 8 km west, 3 km wooden boardwalk over the marshes with flamingos and herons year-round. Leashed dogs welcome on the boardwalk year-round.
Red-sandstone Moorish castle 25 km north-west, the former Arab capital of the Algarve. Leashed dogs allowed on the outdoor grounds and ramparts year-round (entry 2.80 €), not in the museum buildings.
