Athens is genuinely welcoming to dogs but presents unique challenges: extreme summer heat, marble and stone surfaces, limited shade in the ancient areas, and beach restrictions in season. The good news is the locals love dogs, the café terrace culture is relaxed, and spring and autumn offer some of the best weather in Europe for outdoor exploration with a pet.
Athens in July and August is one of Europe's hottest capitals: 38–42°C regularly. For dogs: walk only before 09:00 and after 19:00. Never walk on black asphalt (surface temperature 60°C+). Carry minimum 1 litre of water per dog per day. Never leave your dog in a parked car for any period. Know the location of the nearest 24h vet before you arrive. Heatstroke can develop in under 10 minutes in a parked car.
Dogs must be on-leash in all public spaces in Athens. Muzzles are required for dogs over 20kg and certain breeds under Greek law. Dog waste must be picked up, municipality enforcement is increasing. Dogs are not permitted inside most historical sites (Acropolis, Ancient Agora). Service dogs are always permitted.
Spring (April–May) is the ideal season for Athens with a dog: 20–26°C, all beaches accessible, few crowds, and the city's wildflowers in bloom. Autumn (September–October) is also excellent, still warm enough for beach days but without the dangerous July–August heat. Winter is mild (10–15°C) and quiet. Summer requires strict heat management.
Athens has a significant stray dog population, this is well-known and the city has managed neutering and vaccination programmes. Most strays are gentle and leave domestic dogs alone. However, keep your dog on-leash when passing strays, especially near food markets or tourist areas. Aggression between dogs is rare but possible. The strays are generally a visible and accepted part of Athens' character.
