According to myth, Mykonos was born from the rocks Heracles hurled at the Giants; history records instead a poor island of fishermen and sailors, satellite of the sacred sanctuary of Delos nearby. Constant winds shaped its famous windmills and its whitewashed cubic houses, packed into a labyrinthine main town designed to confuse pirates. Discovered by artists in the 1950s and then adopted by the jet set, Mykonos became the most cosmopolitan island in the Cyclades. Outside July and August, though, it shows a gentler face: quiet lanes in Chora, a hinterland of drystone walls and chapels around Ano Mera, deserted coves swept by the meltemi. It is that Mykonos, the one of clear mornings and coastal paths, that is best savoured with a dog, far from the beach clubs and the summer crowds.
The five windmills lined up above the harbour are the emblem of Mykonos, facing the sunset. The esplanade is open-air and accessible on lead: come early in the morning for the photo without the crowd, as the wind blows hard here almost all year.
The captains' houses with balconies hanging over the waves form Chora's most photogenic quarter. The on-lead stroll here is superb off season; in summer, pass at daybreak, before the bars roll out their terraces.
This cluster of five whitewashed chapels, melted into a single sculpture of lime, is the most famous church in the Cyclades. The interior, rarely open, does not receive dogs; the exterior, however, can be admired freely from the neighbouring rocks.
The island's only inland village keeps the Mykonos of before tourism: a large square, tavernas frequented by locals and the Panagia Tourliani monastery (exterior only for dogs). An ideal starting point for walks in the drystone-walled countryside.
In the island's northeast, this wild beach with no sunbeds or music is the refuge of locals and their dogs, with a rustic taverna above the sand. The dirt access road keeps the crowds away: it is the best swimming option with a pet in summer.
The 1891 lighthouse watches over the strait between Mykonos and Tinos, at the end of a windswept cape. The site, open-air and free, offers the island's finest sunsets: hold the lead firmly, the meltemi gusts here are serious.
