Paros gave the world lychnites, the purest marble of antiquity, the stone of the Venus de Milo and Praxiteles' Hermes, quarried from the underground galleries at Marathi still visible on the hillside. Parikia, built over the ancient city, keeps the Panagia Ekatontapiliani, the church of a hundred doors founded in the 4th century according to legend by Saint Helena, and a Venetian kastro assembled from the column drums of an archaic temple. Lefkes, the island's capital in the age of pirates, watches over the interior from its marble lanes, linked to Prodromos by a flagstoned Byzantine road. Naoussa, an old fishing port huddled behind its half-sunken fortress, has become one of the prettiest harbours in the Cyclades. Now a major hub for Aegean ferries, Paros blends sandy beaches, whitewashed villages and mule paths: a very easy island to enjoy with a dog.
The island's capital unfolds an old quarter of limewashed alleys, bougainvillea and chapels around the remains of the Venetian kastro built from ancient column drums. On a lead, early in the morning or at sunset, it is a delicious labyrinth, and the seafront gives a long flat promenade.
The most photogenic little fishing port in the Cyclades squeezes its colourful caiques against a half-sunken Venetian fortress. Leashed dogs happily wander the quays and lanes, and many harbourside tavernas accept calm companions at outdoor tables.
The old marble-flagged road links Lefkes to Prodromos in an hour of gentle descent among olive trees, drystone walls and chapels, with the sea and Naxos as a backdrop. It is the island's finest walk for a leashed dog; start early, shade is scarce at midday.
Seven hundred metres of golden sand on the east coast, swept by the meltemi that has made it a world-class windsurfing spot. In summer, keep to the undeveloped ends, away from the sunbeds and sailing schools; off season, the whole beach belongs to you and your dog.
The church of a hundred doors, founded according to tradition by Saint Helena in the 4th century, is one of Greece's most important early Christian sanctuaries. Dogs enter neither the church nor the cloister: take turns visiting while the other waits in the shade of the forecourt.
In the bay of Naoussa, wind-sculpted granite rocks carve out a series of miniature coves with transparent water. Off season and early in the morning, dogs explore this lunar landscape freely; in high summer, aim for the coves furthest from the sunbeds.
