The easternmost island of the Aegean, Rhodes has around 115 000 residents and takes its name from the rose (rhodon) that once adorned its coinage. Founded in 408 BC by the merger of three Doric city-states, it hosted the Colossus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Crusader Knights built the medieval walled city from 1309, and its cobbled lanes, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, remain open to leashed dogs today. Greek law requires microchipping and rabies vaccination for all dogs, a leash in all public spaces, and a muzzle in transport and crowded areas. On beaches, only unorganised sections without a sunbed concession permit dogs.
The UNESCO-listed medieval walled city: cobbled lanes welcome leashed dogs, but ticketed monuments such as the Palace of the Grand Masters do not allow pets inside.
The Mandraki harbour walk, flanked by three medieval windmills and the bronze deer at the entrance channel, is open to leashed dogs all day.
One of the oldest landscaped parks in the world, 3 km south of Rhodes Town, with shaded stream-side paths that are ideal for summer midday escapes. Dogs must stay on leash.
The walk around the old town's outer moat gives a quiet, shaded route popular with locals and dogs, with views up to the massive medieval walls.
The unorganised northern section of Faliraki beach welcomes leashed dogs; avoid the sunbed concession zones where dogs are excluded.
The southern tip of the island, 90 km from Rhodes Town, has a long unorganised sandy beach where dogs can roam freely on the windswept dunes, especially off-peak.
