Bregenz, the Celtic Brigantion turned Roman Brigantium, keeps from its two thousand years of history a fortified medieval upper town crowned by the Martinsturm and its 1601 baroque onion dome, one of the largest in Central Europe. Vorarlberg's capital of around 30,000 lives facing Lake Constance: a harbor, the Seeanlagen promenade and above all the Seebühne, the world's largest floating stage, where the Bregenzer Festspiele has unfurled outsized opera sets every summer since 1946 before 7,000 spectators a night. Behind town, the Pfänder rises to 1064 meters with its 1927 cable car. For travellers with a dog, Bregenz is an ideal base: flat lakefront walks, dog swimming along the Pipeline shore towards Lochau, a dog-friendly cable car, a free alpine wildlife park open to leashed dogs and a 24-hour veterinary emergency clinic. The one constraint: leash and muzzle on Austrian public transport.
The world's largest floating stage, its monumental opera sets rising out of the lake. Dogs cannot attend performances, but the set is best admired by day from the free promenade, dog on leash.
Bregenz's mountain at 1064 m: a dog-friendly cable car (small dogs free), a panorama over the whole lake and 240 Alpine peaks, forest trails for the descent.
A free alpine wildlife park on the summit loop: ibex, marmots, deer and wild boar. A rare privilege, leashed dogs may walk the 30-minute circuit.
The emblem tower of the medieval upper town, capped by its huge 1601 baroque onion dome. The quiet cobbled lanes of the Oberstadt around it make the ideal leashed town walk.
The lakefront gardens between the harbor and the festival house: lawns, old trees, free waste-bag dispensers and continuous views over Lake Constance. The evening loop of Bregenz's dogs.
The shoreline path from Bregenz harbor towards Lochau, with gravel accesses where dogs swim year-round. The town's unofficial dog beach, extended by the old Lochau ferry landing spot.
