Vienna was for six centuries the capital of the Habsburg Empire and the gravitational centre of Central Europe. Under the Austro-Hungarian empire the city reached unrivalled architectural splendour: the Ring, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the State Opera. But Vienna is also the city of the café — the Wiener Kaffeehaus, inscribed on UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list, is an institution where people spend hours reading, thinking and talking... often with their dog on their lap. Vienna takes animal welfare seriously: dogs are admitted on the metro, in most museums (outside exhibitions) and in countless cafés. The city even has official off-leash areas (Hundeauslaufflächen) in most parks.
The Prater is a vast park (6 km²) crossed by the Hauptallee, a 4.5 km straight avenue ideal for running with your dog. Off-leash zones are plentiful. The giant Ferris wheel (Riesenrad) is an icon but animals are not admitted.
Danube Island (21 km long) is the paradise for Viennese dogs in summer. Purpose-built dog swimming areas, sandy beaches and cycle paths accessible to pedestrians and animals. Direct access by U1 metro.
Former Habsburg hunting reserve (2,450 ha), the Lainzer Tiergarten is one of Europe's largest urban natural parks. Dogs are admitted on leads on marked trails. Wild boar and deer can be spotted.
Vienna's historic centre (1st district) is dotted with Kaffeehäuser that accept dogs. Café Central, Hawelka, Café Landtmann — most welcome well-behaved animals. A unique cultural experience.
The Schönbrunn palace gardens (1.7 km²) welcome dogs on leads. The palace interior does not accept animals. The gravel paths and panoramas over Vienna make for a walk that's royal in every sense.
