Zell am See is Austria's lake-and-glacier resort in the Pinzgau, where muzzled, leashed dogs ride the Schmittenhöhe cable cars, the Kitzsteinhorn glacier lifts up to 3,029 m and even the Lake Zell boats (5 euros a cruise), and the town keeps an official off-leash dog zone at Erlberg; the one local habit to adopt is the leash-or-muzzle rule in all public spaces. Top spots for pets include the Elisabethpark lakefront, the roughly 11 km Zeller See loop via Thumersbach, the Erlberg off-leash dog zone and the Sigmund Thun gorge boardwalk to the Klammsee, especially around the lakefront esplanade and old town around the Stadtplatz, Thumersbach across the water for quiet shoreline stays, and Kaprun village for the glacier side.

Zell am See, around 10,000 residents squeezed between the turquoise Zeller See and the Schmittenhöhe, is the tourist capital of Salzburg's Pinzgau. A market town founded around 740 by Salzburg monks (Cella in Bisontio), it took off when the Giselabahn railway arrived in 1875 and turned the fishing village into an imperial summer resort, then again with skiing and the Kitzsteinhorn above Kaprun, Austria's first glacier ski area opened in 1965. With a dog the region is surprisingly open: dog tickets on the Schmittenhöhe and Kitzsteinhorn lifts up to 3,029 m, dogs on the lake boats (5 euros a cruise), an official off-leash dog zone at Erlberg and a dog park at the Klammsee. The trade-off is a strict rulebook: in all public spaces of Zell am See and Kaprun a leash or muzzle is mandatory, and the muzzle goes physically on in cable car cabins, buses and boats. The lidos and marked bathing areas stay closed to dogs, but the rest of the shoreline and the roughly 11 km lake loop are theirs to explore.
The 2,000 m home mountain, with a summit panorama of more than thirty 3,000 m peaks above the lake. Dogs ride with their own ticket, muzzled and leashed in the cabin, then walk the summit roads and trails on the lead; muzzles are sold (15 euros) or rented at the valley station.
The turquoise glacial lake is walked via the esplanade, the Elisabethpark and the roughly 11 km loop through Thumersbach. Dog swimming is allowed outside the marked lidos; the boat fleet takes muzzled dogs (5 euros for the panorama cruise, 3 euros for the crossing).
The town's official dog zone on the northern shore by the protected reed belt: the only place in Zell am See where a dog legally runs free of leash and muzzle. A lovely trail runs along the reserve next door, with lake access for a dip.
A 32 m deep glacial gorge in Kaprun whose wooden walkways above the roaring Kapruner Ache are walked with a leashed dog (open roughly May to October). At the top, the Klammsee loop and a spacious dog park where dogs can run free.
Salzburg's glacier lifts dogs (daily, 7-day or annual dog tickets) to the 3,029 m platform, muzzled and leashed in the gondolas. Welcome in the mountain restaurants, banned from the ski pistes; expect snow even in high summer.
Zell am See's compact medieval heart: the town square, the Romanesque St. Hippolyt church and the 12th-century Vogtturm are covered in a ten-minute leashed stroll between terraces. Many cafés tolerate calm dogs, ask before stepping in.
