Bad Ischl owes its fortune to salt springs and a marriage: the birth here in 1830 of Archduke Franz Joseph, the future emperor, after his mother's fertility cure, turned the small Salzkammergut salt-mining town into an imperial summer residence. Franz Joseph spent 82 consecutive summers at the mustard-yellow Kaiservilla, set in a 20-hectare park, and signed the 1914 declaration of war there that opened the First World War. The 1829 Trinkhalle, the riverside Esplanade and century-old pastry houses like Zauner still carry that spa-town Belle Époque. Today the cultural capital of the Salzkammergut and a gateway to the neighbouring lakes (Hallstättersee, Wolfgangsee, Traunsee) and to Hallstatt, the town remains a compact, flat base that is easy to explore on foot with a dog, even though its biggest landmark, the Kaiservilla, cannot be toured with one.
Emperor Franz Joseph's summer residence for 82 years, where the 1914 declaration of war was signed. The guided interior tour does not admit dogs.
A 20-hectare landscape park around the Kaiservilla, with shaded gravel avenues and the Marmorschlössl. Leashed dogs welcome on the paths, not inside the pavilions.
A cable car since 1959 up to the Katrin mountain station (1,400 m), with alpine trails and views over the Salzkammergut lakes. Dogs travel free, muzzle and leash compulsory.
The 1829 spa building, now the tourist office and cultural meeting point, fronted by the open Kurpark. Leashed dogs welcome in the outdoor gardens.
A 130 m wooded hill at the edge of town, topped by the 1885 Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Warte tower. A shaded 4.1 km circuit trail, leash recommended.
A flat, tree-lined promenade along the Traun river, linking the Kurpark, the Trinkhalle and the town's cafes. The default daily walk, on leash.
