Dog Parks & Walks in Vienna

The Prater is Vienna's most famous park: 600 hectares of grassland, forest, and the iconic Hauptallee — a 4.5 km tree-lined avenue stretching from the Praterstern to the Lusthaus. Dogs are welcome on the Hauptallee and in most of the park. The Prater Meadows (Praterauen) along the Danube branch are the best area for off-leash running, with several designated zones. The area around the historic Wurstelprater amusement park is always busy and best avoided with dogs.

A 21-kilometre artificial island between the Danube and the New Danube, the Donauinsel is Vienna's great outdoor recreational space. It has cycling paths, swimming areas, restaurants, and enormous amounts of green space. For dogs, the northern end of the island (above the Floridsdorfer Bridge) has designated dog zones where dogs can run freely and swim in the New Danube. Check the Wiener Umweltschutzabteilung rules for current dog zone locations as they are periodically reviewed.

The Wienerwald (Vienna Woods) is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of forested hills surrounding the western edge of Vienna. For dog owners, it is a tremendous resource: kilometres of hiking trails through beech and oak woodland, accessible by public transport from the city. The trails around Kahlenberg, Leopoldsberg, and through the Lainzer Tiergarten (deer park — dogs must be on-leash to protect wildlife) provide exceptional walking.
