Pet-Friendly Restaurants in Vienna

One of Vienna's most legendary and beloved coffee houses, the Hawelka has been open since 1939 and was the meeting place of the entire Viennese artistic and literary scene for decades. The interior is gloriously unrenovated — cracked plaster, nicotine-stained walls, marble tabletops. Dogs have always been welcome here and the tradition continues. The famous Buchteln (sweet buns) come out at 22:00 sharp each evening — one of Vienna's great late-night rituals.

Opened in 1873, the Café Landtmann is considered Vienna's most prestigious coffee house — Freud was a regular, and Austrian politicians still hold meetings here. The terrace overlooking the Burgtheater and Rathaus park is magnificent in summer. Dogs are welcome on the terrace. The interior, with its grand Belle Époque rooms, is more formal but generally accepts well-behaved dogs. The breakfast here is exceptional — one of Vienna's finest.

The oldest café on the Ringstrasse (1861), the Schwarzenberg is a magnificent, wood-panelled grand café with chandeliers and red velvet banquettes. The terrace overlooks the Ringstrasse boulevard and the fountain. Dogs are welcome on the terrace and the café is one of the more dog-accommodating of Vienna's grand establishments. An espresso here with a dog at your feet, watching the trams and horses go by on the Ring, is a genuinely special Vienna experience.

A no-frills neighbourhood Kaffeehaus in the 6th District near the Westbahnhof, the Café Westend is exactly what a Vienna coffee house should be: open all night, staffed by gruff but efficient waiters, and accepting of everyone — including dogs. It serves the full Viennese coffee house menu (Melange, Einspänner, Verlängerter) and simple Austrian food. Dogs are welcome inside and the clientele is reassuringly local.

A legendary Vienna beach bar on the Danube Canal, Strandbar Herrmann brings the beach to the city with sand, deckchairs, and cocktails on the canal bank. Open from May to September, it is one of Vienna's great summer experiences. Dogs are welcome at this outdoor venue. The canal path extends both ways for a pleasant dog walk before or after drinks.
