Begur

Ruins of the medieval castle at the top of the village, whose ramparts offer a 360-degree panorama over the coves and hinterland. A freely accessible walk up, with leashed dogs welcome; bring water, as shade is scarce.

A historic coastal path cut into the rock linking Begur's coves, between pines and sheer drops to the sea. The dog-friendly gem of the area: leashed dogs allowed all year round, including in summer when the beaches are off-limits.

A small sheltered pebble cove at the head of an inlet, with a few fishermen's houses and a restaurant. Dogs are banned on this beach in the peak summer bathing season; off season, an early on-leash stop is tolerated.

A cove of clear blue water, one of the most photographed on the Costa Brava, framed by pines and rocks. The beach is off-limits to dogs in the summer high season; reach it instead via the camí de ronda, open to leashed dogs.

Begur's largest cove, sand and pebbles north of the village, popular with families. Dogs are not allowed in the high summer season on this lifeguarded beach; the coastal path above it stays open to leashed dogs.

A cluster of colourful colonial mansions built by the indianos who returned from Cuba, scattered through the historic centre. A free, shaded on-leash stroll through the lanes, dotted with palm trees and ornate balconies.
