Maspalomas is the classic winter-sun resort in the south of Gran Canaria, mild and dry all year, where the famous beach itself is off-limits to dogs but the promenades and nearby official dog beaches make it an easy off-season base. Top spots for pets include the Boulevard El Faro boardwalk by the Maspalomas lighthouse, the birdlife of La Charca lagoon, and the long Meloneras seafront promenade, especially around Meloneras, San Fernando de Maspalomas, and the edge of Playa del Inglรฉs.

Maspalomas was born of tourism: until the 1960s, the southern tip of Gran Canaria was just an isolated lighthouse, the Faro de Maspalomas, and a vast field of dunes. An international planning competition in 1961 launched the resort that now runs from Playa del Inglรฉs to Meloneras, wrapped around the Maspalomas Dunes Special Nature Reserve and the La Charca lagoon. It is Europe's capital of winter sun, with a mild subtropical climate all year, dry and bright. For dog owners it is an honest paradox: the famous beaches and protected dunes are off-limits to dogs, but the long seafront promenades are perfect for on-leash walks, especially off-season, and the neighbouring Mogรกn municipality opened five official dog beaches in February 2026.
The 19th-century lighthouse marking the island's southern tip. The surrounding Boulevard El Faro is an open-air promenade where leashed dogs are welcome. Free, and lovely at sunset.
The iconic dune field, a protected special nature reserve. Dogs are banned here as on the beach: admire it from the viewpoints and marked paths around the edge.
A saltwater lagoon and bird habitat at the foot of the lighthouse. Leashed dogs are allowed on the boardwalk and surrounding paths, but not in the reserve itself. Bring binoculars.
A wide paved seafront promenade between the lighthouse and the cliffs, lined with terraces. The easiest place in Maspalomas to stroll with a leashed dog and a sea view.
The nearest official dog beach, about 20 minutes west, opened by Mogรกn in February 2026. Limited hours, roughly 07:00 to 10:00 and 18:00 to 21:00, within a marked zone.
The residential town behind the resorts, with shops, veterinary clinics and Parque Tony Gallardo. This is where the local life and practical services for a dog are found.
