Castell de Begur (11th-century castle ruins)
Hilltop, above the casc antic · Pujada al Castell, 17255 Begur
The 11th-century Castell de Begur ruins crowning the 200 m hill above the casc antic, rebuilt and dismantled several times between the 11th and 17th centuries (last destruction by French troops in 1810). Open-air heritage site offering a panoramic 360-degree view over the six Begur calas, the Cap de Begur lighthouse, the Medes islands off L`Estartit, and the Empordà plain to the Pyrenees on clear days. Free to visit, leashed dogs welcome all the way up.
💡 Climb at sunset; the warm light catches the cala portfolio below and the Medes islands offshore. The path is steep stone steps (15-20 min from the Plaça de l`Església), carry water in summer and watch the polished worn stone with a young or senior dog
