Santa Eulària des Riu, on the east coast of Ibiza in the Balearics, is the island's calmest and most family-friendly resort. Its name recalls a geographical curiosity: the Riu de Santa Eulària is the only permanent river in the Balearics, crossed near its mouth by an old stone bridge of Roman origin. Above the town, the Puig de Missa hill carries a whitewashed sixteenth-century fortified church and an old hamlet that once watched the coast against corsairs. Below, a long palm-lined seafront promenade dotted with sculptures and a marina links the beaches of Cala Llonga and Es Canar, home to the historic Punta Arabí hippy market held each week. Known for its food scene and unhurried pace, Santa Eulària is explored on a leash, between old quarter, seafront and riverbanks, a gentle counterpoint to the island's busier resorts.
This hill crowned by a whitewashed sixteenth-century fortified church and an old hamlet overlooks the town and the sea. The lanes and outdoor forecourt are walked on a leash, but the church interior stays off-limits to dogs.
This old stone bridge of Roman origin spans the only permanent river in the Balearics, now fringed with greenery. An open-air site freely accessible on a leash, pleasant for a short shaded stroll by the water.
The long palm-lined seafront promenade links the centre to the marina and its restaurants facing the boats. A pedestrian space perfect for a leashed stroll morning or evening, calmer than the neighbouring resorts.
This broad sandy beach at the head of a sheltered bay is a family classic south of town. Dogs are banned from this patrolled beach during the bathing season, so aim instead for an unmanaged rocky cove.
Ibiza's oldest hippy market spreads its hundreds of craft stalls under the pines of Es Canar each week. An open-air market where leashed dogs are tolerated, best avoided at peak hours and in strong heat with a pet.
This shaded avenue lined with plane trees and stalls runs from the centre down to the sea, the lively heart of local life. A pleasant pedestrian walk on a leash, dotted with terraces for a shaded break with the dog.
