Sanremo is the flower-growing capital of the Italian Riviera in Liguria's province of Imperia, a genial, flat-fronted resort of palm promenades and one of Italy's mildest climates, easygoing with a dog outdoors even where the Casino and church interiors are not: leashed dogs walk the seafront Corso Imperatrice, ride the long Pista Ciclabile coastal path on the old Genoa-Ventimiglia railway, and reach a designated dog beach, while the summer stabilimenti restrict dogs on the paid sand. Top spots for pets include the flat, 24 km Pista Ciclabile del Parco Costiero Riviera dei Fiori on the former coastal railway, the palm-lined Corso Imperatrice promenade, the exotic Giardini di Villa Ormond, the medieval La Pigna old town, and the free Pian di Poma dog beach with the Baubeach dog beach at nearby Arma di Taggia, especially around the flat seafront and Corso Imperatrice, the Porto Vecchio and Portosole marina with the Piazza Bresca restaurant square behind it, the hillside La Pigna old town, and the neighbouring Riviera dei Fiori towns of Ospedaletti, Bordighera, Arma di Taggia and San Lorenzo al Mare along the cycle path.

Sanremo, capital of the Riviera dei Fiori in Liguria's province of Imperia, stretches along the sea between mountains and coast, a few kilometres from the French border. City of flowers and of the famous Italian Song Festival, it owes its fame to one of the mildest climates in Italy, which drew a Russian and English winter set from the 19th century onward, hence the palm-lined Corso Imperatrice and the grand Belle รpoque hotels. Above the modern town, the medieval old quarter of La Pigna coils its concentric lanes up the hill. On the seafront, the Liberty-style Casino (1905), the Porto Vecchio and the Portosole marina animate the coast, while the long Pista Ciclabile, built on the former railway, runs beside the sea. Italy, eurozone, EU and Schengen member. Emergency: 112.
The great flat, paved path laid on the former Genoa-Ventimiglia coastal railway, about 24 km long between Ospedaletti and San Lorenzo al Mare. Leashed dogs are welcome for long walks beside the water; shade is patchy, so carry water and set out early in summer.
The palm-lined seafront promenade, the oldest in Sanremo, named for a Russian empress who wintered here. Flat and level, it is walked on lead and links easily to the cycle path for a longer loop with sea views.
Sanremo's medieval heart, a maze of concentric lanes, arches and steps climbing the hill, nicknamed La Pigna (the pine cone) for its shape. A wholly outdoor wander where leashed dogs are welcome; the lanes are steep and cobbled, so take it slowly.
A free public park laid out as an open-air botanical museum, with palm groves, cedars and a Japanese garden born of Sanremo's twinning with Atami. Leashed dogs are welcome; keep to the paths, as it is a well-tended botanical collection.
The landmark Liberty-style Casino, built in 1905, crowns the terraces above the seafront. Pets are not allowed in the gaming rooms; enjoy the facade and palm-lined terraces from outside, or take turns inside while one person waits with the dog.
The old fishing harbour, which supplies the Piazza Bresca kitchens each morning, sits beside the large Portosole yacht marina. The flat quays and cafe terraces are walked on lead for a relaxed waterside stroll, right beside the fish restaurants.
