Portofino is the iconic fishing village of the Italian Riviera, a cluster of pastel houses around a tiny, exclusive harbour on a steep wooded promontory in the province of Genoa, glamorous but honest work with a dog: there is essentially no dog beach and the coast is rocky and pricey, yet leashed dogs stroll the flat harbour piazzetta, climb to Castello Brown and the lighthouse, and hike the Parco di Portofino trails to San Fruttuoso. Top spots for pets include the flat harbour piazzetta and its dog-friendly terraces, the open-air climb past the church of San Giorgio to Castello Brown and on to the Faro di Portofino lighthouse, the leashed park trail over the headland to the abbey of San Fruttuoso, and the coastal walk to Paraggi and Santa Margherita, especially around the flat harbour piazzetta at the heart of the village, the wooded Parco Naturale Regionale di Portofino behind it, the cove of Paraggi towards Santa Margherita, and the gateway towns of Santa Margherita Ligure and Rapallo where the buses and ferries run.

Tucked around a tiny harbour on a wooded promontory of the Ligurian Riviera, Portofino was long a modest fishing village before becoming, in the 20th century, one of the Mediterranean's most glamorous boltholes. Its pastel-lined piazzetta, its yachts and its setting inside the Parco Naturale Regionale di Portofino made it a global postcard. For a dog owner, Portofino calls for honesty: the coast is rocky and exclusive, there is essentially no dog beach, and summer bakes the stone. But the piazzetta is flat and easy, leashed dogs climb to Castello Brown and the lighthouse, and walk the park trails to the hidden abbey of San Fruttuoso. You arrive by bus or ferry from Santa Margherita, both of which take dogs.
The heart of the village: a small, flat square at the water's edge, ringed by terraces and pastel houses. At sea level and stair-free, it is the easiest place in Portofino for a leashed dog, with dog-friendly terraces around it.
A medieval fort turned villa above the harbour, whose grounds and terraces give the classic view over Portofino. The open-air climb and the gardens are dog-friendly on the lead; confirm the policy for the interior.
The lighthouse at the tip of the promontory, reached by a scenic open-air path continuing past Castello Brown. An easy, photogenic there-and-back that leashed dogs love; the path is exposed, so bring water.
The regional park covering the whole promontory, with around 80 km of mule tracks and coastal trails. Leashed dogs are welcome, up to three per person, making it the main place near the village for a proper walk.
A thousand-year-old abbey in a hidden cove reachable only on foot or by boat. Small dogs may enter only if carried, but there is a supervised dog-minding service at the entrance (book 48h ahead); the trail from Portofino is a fine leashed outing.
The area's dog beach, a free pebble stretch on the road to Paraggi in the Santa Margherita municipality, with a dog shower and fresh water. It is the one place near Portofino where a dog can actually swim in season.
