Orvieto rises on a sheer tufa cliff above the Umbrian valley, founded by the Etruscans who carved wells, cisterns, and tunnels into the soft volcanic rock long before Rome's rise. The city's crowning landmark is the Duomo, a striped Gothic cathedral with a shimmering golden mosaic facade, its Cappella di San Brizio holding Luca Signorelli's dramatic Last Judgment frescoes. Nearby, the Pozzo di San Patrizio, a 16th-century well with two spiralling ramps, was built as an emergency water supply. Beneath the streets, the Orvieto Underground reveals a labyrinth of Etruscan and medieval caves carved into the tufa. The surrounding hills produce Orvieto Classico, one of Italy's best-known white wines. A funicular has linked the valley train station to the hilltop old town since the 19th century. For visitors travelling with a dog, that funicular carries small pets free, the Anello della Rupe path circling the cliff is fully leash-friendly, and the underground cave tour is one of the few monuments here that welcomes a leashed dog inside.
Orvieto's striped Gothic cathedral, famous for its golden mosaic facade and Luca Signorelli's Last Judgment frescoes inside the Cappella di San Brizio. The piazza in front is freely accessible with a leashed dog, though the cathedral interior itself does not admit pets, as with most Italian churches.
A remarkable 16th-century well nearly 54 metres deep, with two spiral ramps built so mules could descend and fetch water without crossing paths. Only small dogs up to 12 kg are admitted, and they must be carried in a suitable bag rather than walked down.
A guided tour of roughly 45 minutes through a labyrinth of Etruscan and medieval caves carved into the tufa beneath the old town, including ancient wells, olive presses, and dovecotes. It's one of the rare monuments in Orvieto that welcomes leashed dogs on the tour itself.
A 13th-century civic tower rising over the crossing of Corso Cavour and Via del Duomo, climbable via stairs or a partial lift for sweeping views over the tufa rooftops and the Umbrian countryside. As an interior monument climb, it does not admit pets, though the streets around its base are freely walkable on leash.
A pedestrian ring path, roughly 3 km, that circles the entire tufa cliff beneath Orvieto's walls, part of the PAAO archaeological-environmental park. It's mostly flat, offers valley views the whole way around, and is fully leash-friendly, the best option in town for a proper dog walk.
Orvieto's main street runs the length of the old town, lined with shops, wine bars, and terrace restaurants, many of which welcome a well-behaved dog outdoors. It's the natural spine for exploring on foot, connecting the Duomo, Torre del Moro, and the smaller squares of the historic center.
