A beloved neighbourhood osteria in Prati, just north of the Vatican, that has been serving genuine Roman cucina since the 1980s. The atmosphere is convivial and unpretentious, with long communal tables and an owner who genuinely likes animals. Arrive early; they do not take reservations and it fills up fast.

Roscioli is one of Rome's most celebrated delicatessen-restaurants, with an extraordinary wine cellar and an encyclopaedic selection of cured meats, cheeses, and Roman classics. The outdoor tables along Via dei Giubbonari are always welcoming to well-behaved dogs, and the staff are relaxed and friendly about it. The carbonara and amatriciana here are consistently cited among the city's best. Reservations are essential for the indoor section, but the street tables are first-come-first-served and always dog-friendly.

Gabriele Bonci's famous pizza al taglio counter is widely considered the best in Rome, if not Italy. It's a standing-room-only shop, but the sidewalk outside is generous and this is very much the local way to eat: standing on the pavement with your pizza and your dog. The rotating toppings are extraordinary — from seasonal vegetables to creative cheese combinations — and slices are sold by weight. Dogs are as normal on the pavement here as anywhere in Rome.
