Pet-Friendly Attractions in Rome

The Gianicolo hill offers the best panoramic view of Rome and is a favourite walking destination for Romans with dogs. The long promenade along the ridge is tree-shaded, car-free, and has benches with extraordinary views over the city's domes and rooftops. Dogs must be on-leash but the atmosphere is very relaxed. The area connects to the Villa Pamphilj park. A beautiful walk at sunset.

Rome's most theatrical piazza, built on the footprint of Domitian's stadium, is fully accessible to dogs (on-leash). The baroque fountains, including Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers, the street artists, and the café terraces make it a genuinely enjoyable stop. Several of the café terraces on the square's edges welcome dogs. Best visited early in the morning or in the evening when the tourist crowds thin out.

Trastevere's medieval streets, ivy-covered walls, and neighbourhood piazzas make it Rome's most charming district for a dog walk. Dogs are normal here — you will see them tied outside bars, trotting alongside locals through the vicoli, and sleeping under café chairs. The area is at its best in the early morning (before the tourists arrive) and in the evening (after 20:00). Stroll through Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, down Via della Scala, and along the Lungotevere.

Walking the ancient Appian Way with your dog is one of Rome's most memorable experiences. The 2,000-year-old paving stones, the umbrella pines, the crumbling tombs and aqueducts — all with your dog on-leash beside you — creates a genuinely extraordinary atmosphere. Sundays are best, when the road is closed to traffic from 09:00 to 18:00. Bike rental is available at the park entrance for those who want to cover more ground.
