Saturnia is a tiny thermal-springs village deep in the Tuscan Maremma, built around the free, open-air hot pools of the Cascate del Mulino and a genuinely rural, low-key pet-travel base rather than a city break. Top spots for pets include the free Cascate del Mulino hot springs, the Terme di Saturnia resort's VIPets program, and the Roman-era Porta Romana gate, especially around the walled medieval borgo, the Terme di Saturnia resort just outside it, and the wider Maremma countryside toward Pitigliano and Sovana.

Saturnia, a tiny hamlet in the Tuscan Maremma, takes its name from the god Saturn according to local Etruscan and Roman legend, which made it one of the oldest towns in Italy. What draws visitors today is not so much its ancient past as its water: the Cascate del Mulino, a series of natural limestone pools carved by sulphur-rich water gushing at 37.5C, free and open 24 hours a day, all year round. The walled hamlet keeps the Porta Romana, the only one of its four ancient gates still standing, and the Rocca Aldobrandesca, a 12th-century fortress restored by Siena. Just outside, the paid Terme di Saturnia Natural Spa & Golf Resort runs a VIPets program that explicitly welcomes dogs at its bar, its trattoria and along its golf-course paths. No sea, no crowds, Saturnia is Tuscany's most rural and quietest base for travelling with a dog, provided you have a car.
The famous free, 24-hour hot springs, carved into limestone by sulphur-rich water at 37.5C. Leashed dogs are welcome on the natural site, but not inside the bathing pools themselves for hygiene reasons.
The only one of Saturnia's four Roman gates still standing, opening onto the line of the ancient Via Clodia. Easily seen on lead in a few minutes from the public streets.
A 12th-century fortress built by the Aldobrandeschi and restored by Siena in the 15th century, right beside the Porta Romana. Seen from the outside on lead; the interior is not open to visitors.
The paid spa resort next to the village runs a VIPets program that explicitly welcomes dogs at its bar, its trattoria and along its golf-course paths, with a basket and bowl provided in the room. Dogs are not admitted in the thermal pool itself.
Nicknamed 'Little Jerusalem', this town built entirely of tufo rock and perched on a cliff is visible from far off on the approach road, 25 km from Saturnia. Its cobbled lanes are walkable on lead.
Etruscan-era sunken roads cut into the tufo rock linking Pitigliano to Sovana, cool and shaded even in summer. Leashed dogs are welcome on this roughly 7 km trail, but the terrain is uneven in places.
