Dog Parks & Walks in Rome

Rome's most famous park, covering 80 hectares in the heart of the city, is a genuinely wonderful place for a dog walk. The broad alleys, grassy slopes, and wooded paths offer excellent variety. Dogs must be on-leash throughout the gardens proper, but there is a designated dog area near the Viale delle Magnolie entrance where off-leash play is permitted. The park also has excellent water fountains (nasoni) throughout — a Rome institution that dogs love.

At 184 hectares, Villa Pamphilj is the largest landscaped public park in Rome and arguably the best for dogs. The park has multiple designated aree cani (dog areas) where off-leash running is officially allowed, and the vast meadows and wooded trails offer real space. Far less crowded than Villa Borghese, it is a favourite of Roman dog owners. The lake area in the centre of the park is particularly popular for morning walks.

One of Rome's most atmospheric walks: the ancient Appian Way, lined with tombs, umbrella pines, and original Roman paving stones, stretching south from the city into open countryside. Dogs must be on-leash throughout the archaeological park, but the space is enormous and on Sundays the road is closed to cars from 09:00 to 18:00, making it a peaceful promenade for dogs and owners alike. The ruined aqueducts section (reached by bike) is particularly impressive.

A 160-hectare wooded park in the Parioli neighbourhood that is a genuine local favourite for dog walking. Villa Ada has a large designated dog area near the main entrance on Via Salaria, plus a lake, cycling paths, and dense woodland. The park is far less touristic than Villa Borghese and offers real tranquillity — a favourite of Roman families and their dogs, especially on weekday mornings.
