Peniche was long an island: only in the 16th century did drifting sands finally tie it to the mainland, creating this fortified peninsula jutting into the Atlantic. Its fortress, built to repel corsairs, served as a political prison under the Salazar dictatorship; the 1960 escape of communist leader รlvaro Cunhal remains legendary. A great sardine port, the town still lives from fishing and canning, and its restaurants serve some of Portugal's best fish. Since the 2000s Peniche has also become a world surfing capital, with the Supertubos wave and a stop on the world championship tour. For a traveller with a dog, this is raw, windswept seaside: the spectacular cliffs of Cabo Carvoeiro, the dunes of Baleal and immense beaches out of season.
At the tip of the peninsula, the cape lines up jagged cliffs, a lighthouse and ocean-carved rocks, including the famous Nau dos Corvos. The coastal path is walked on lead, holding your dog firmly on windy days.
This islet linked to the coast by a sandy tombolo is the heart of the local surf culture, with its schools, cafรฉs and sunsets. Outside the bathing season, the immense beaches framing it are a running paradise for dogs.
Europe's "Pipeline" unrolls its perfect barrels south of town and hosts the world surfing elite every autumn. Outside the supervised bathing season, walking this immense sand with a leashed dog is superb, surfer show included.
The 16th-century fortress, turned political prison under the Estado Novo, today houses the National Museum of Resistance and Freedom. Dogs cannot enter the museum, but the walk around the ocean-side ramparts is a fine on-lead stroll.
This small peninsula north of town raises its layered cliffs and rock arch above an often furious sea. A short, striking walking goal, on lead and away from the edge, the gusts here are serious.
Ten kilometres offshore, this biosphere reserve archipelago shelters a fort set on the water and seabird colonies. Excursion boats generally do not accept dogs and the reserve strictly protects its wildlife: admire the islands from the cape instead.
