Walks & Green Spaces in Peniche

The most dramatic walk in Peniche: a cliff-edge path circling the 16th-century fortress at the tip of the peninsula, with Atlantic views in three directions. Dogs on lead are welcome on the path. The fortress itself served as a political prison under Salazar — the exterior and walls are always accessible. The combination of fortification walls, crashing Atlantic waves, and wild westerly wind is unforgettable.

The sheltered north beach of the peninsula, protected from the full Atlantic swell by the peninsula itself. Calmer water than the south-facing beaches, making it the preferred swimming beach for families and dogs. Outside the summer season (June 15–September 15 dog ban on main beaches), this is where locals walk their dogs in the mornings. Fine sand, good for a 3-km walk.

The westernmost point of the Peniche peninsula, a dramatic headland with eroded limestone formations (the Nau dos Corvos stack is the most photographed). The cliff path from the lighthouse to the cape is about 2 km one way and offers the most dramatic Atlantic coastline accessible on foot in this part of Portugal. Dogs on lead welcome throughout.
