Aveiro, nicknamed the 'Venice of Portugal', owes its existence to the Ria de Aveiro, a coastal lagoon that has shaped the city since the Middle Ages. It grew rich on salt, cod fishing and the harvesting of moliรงo (seaweed) gathered by the moliceiro boats, then declined when the lagoon silted up in the 16th century, before reviving in the 19th century with a new canal cut to the sea and a flourish of Art Nouveau architecture. Today its canals, decorated facades and brightly painted moliceiro make it one of central Portugal's most picturesque stops. For the traveller with a dog, Aveiro is unusually accommodating: flat and compact, with three fenced dog parks, a tolerant esplanada culture, moliceiro boats that accept leashed dogs, and Atlantic beaches and the striped palheiros of Costa Nova a short trip away.
The central canal and its colourful moliceiro boats, now electric, lined with Art Nouveau facades. Free dog-friendly walk; small leashed dogs admitted on a cruise on request.
The old fishermen's quarter along the Sรฃo Roque canal, narrow streets, tiled houses and Art Nouveau buildings. Fully pedestrian, dog-friendly on a leash.
The striped palheiros of Costa Nova, former fishermen's warehouses, among Portugal's most photographed houses. Seafront promenade dog-friendly on a leash.
The central city park, around 20 ha on a former convent, tree-lined avenues, lakes and an Art Nouveau bandstand. Leashed dogs for a shaded stroll.
Three fenced municipal dog parks (Forca-Vouga east, Fonte do Meio north, Canal de Sรฃo Roque west) with agility equipment, the only legal way to let a dog off-leash.
A wild Atlantic beach on the edge of a protected nature reserve, reached by ferry. Leashed dogs only; restricted zones off-limits, loose dogs can trigger closures.
