Best Time to Visit with a Dog
May, June (before 15th), September (after 15th), and October are ideal. Beach access is unrestricted, the weather is mild (18–22°C), the Atlantic is manageable, and the town is calm. July and August are busy and the beach ban applies — still doable but the cliff walks become the main outlet. November to March is quiet, raw, and magnificent for serious walkers with dogs.
Atlantic Wind & Waves
Peniche is exposed to the full force of the North Atlantic and the wind is a constant companion, especially at Cabo Carvoeiro and the fortress cliffs. Keep dogs on short leads at cliff edges at all times. In winter and spring, northerly gales can make the cliff paths genuinely treacherous for small dogs. Check wind forecasts before heading to exposed sections.
