Ristorante Francesca
Sasso Barisano / 200 m from Piazza Vittorio Veneto ยท Via Madonna delle Virtรน 41, 75100 Matera
A Sassi cave restaurant carved directly into the limestone tufa of Sasso Barisano along Via Madonna delle Virtรน, the panoramic balcony road over the Gravina ravine. Run by chef Francesca Casaluce, specialising in Lucanian peasant cuisine: orecchiette con cime di rapa, peperoni cruschi (sun-dried Senise peppers fried crisp), cavatelli al ragรน di podolica, baccalร alla materana. Leashed dogs welcome on the panoramic terrace overlooking Sasso Caveoso and the rupestrian churches year-round and in the limestone-cave main room.
๐ก Book the panoramic terrace at 19:45 in summer; the Sasso Caveoso opposite glows golden in the last sun, the rupestrian church of Santa Maria de Idris sits 200 m across the ravine, your dog rests on cool tufa flagstone and at 20:30 the entire Sasso lights up house by house as the limestone holds the day's warmth into the night.
