Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano
Centre / heart of the UNESCO Sassi cave-dwelling districts
The two UNESCO World Heritage cave-dwelling districts that flank the Gravina ravine on the east side of the Piano: Sasso Caveoso (south, the more archaic, with the medieval cave dwellings preserved as they were emptied in 1952 under the Risanamento dei Sassi law) and Sasso Barisano (north, more rebuilt, with limestone-block facades layered over the cave entrances). Inhabited continuously since the Paleolithic, they make Matera the third-oldest continuously inhabited city in the world (after Aleppo and Jericho). Leashed dogs welcome year-round on all lanes, panoramic viewpoints (Belvedere Luigi Guerricchio, Piazzetta Pascoli) and pavement extensions; the indoor cave-dwelling museums and rupestrian churches admit only assistance dogs.
๐ก Walk Sasso Caveoso at 18:30 in summer; descend from Piazza Pascoli to Via Madonna delle Virtรน via Via Bruno Buozzi, the western sun catches the tufa cliff facades in golden light, the rupestrian church of Santa Maria de Idris stands silhouetted above the ravine, your dog walks cool pumice-textured limestone alleys and at 20:30 the entire Sasso lights up cave by cave as the limestone holds the day's warmth into the night.
