Asheville grew up where the French Broad and Swannanoa rivers meet in the Blue Ridge Mountains, a mountain trading town that boomed in the late 1800s when the railroad arrived and George Vanderbilt built the Biltmore, still the largest privately owned house in America, on its southern edge. A 1920s building spree left downtown with one of the finest collections of Art Deco architecture in the South, then a long slump froze it in time until artists, brewers and hikers rediscovered it. Today Asheville is a walkable town of galleries, more than forty breweries and a riverside arts district, wrapped by national forest and the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is also, by common consent, one of the most dog-friendly cities in the country: leashed dogs are welcome on the Biltmore grounds, on Parkway trails, at the Arboretum and on brewery patios all over town. Two things shape a visit with a dog. The mountains mean real seasons, mild summers and cold, sometimes icy winters at 650 metres. And Hurricane Helene tore through the French Broad riverfront in September 2024, so the riverside dog parks are being rebuilt and the River Arts District is still finding its feet, even as the city itself is very much open and welcoming.
George Vanderbilt's Gilded Age chateau sits in 8,000 acres of gardens and woodland designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Leashed dogs are welcome across the grounds, gardens and walking paths, and on the outdoor patios of the Bistro and Cedric's Tavern, though not inside the house itself. Paid estate admission is required, and first-come kennels let you tour the interior dog-free.
The 469-mile scenic parkway runs along the mountains right past Asheville, with overlooks, picnic areas and trailheads a few minutes from downtown. Dogs are welcome on a leash of up to six feet at overlooks and on most trails, though not inside visitor centres. There is no entrance fee, which makes it the easy default for a mountain walk with a dog.
Asheville's compact Art Deco downtown is made for walking a dog on the lead: Pack Square, the free self-guided Urban Trail past thirty history stations, dog-welcoming shops and a ring of brewery and restaurant patios. The citywide leash law (up to eight feet on public property) applies throughout.
A former industrial riverfront along the French Broad, filled with working studios, galleries and breweries and threaded by the Wilma Dykeman Greenway. Leashed dogs are welcome on the greenway and streets, and many galleries let them in too. The district was hit hard by Hurricane Helene in 2024 and is still recovering, so check ahead for what has reopened.
A 434-acre public garden and forest beside the Blue Ridge Parkway, with ten miles of hiking and biking trails open to leashed dogs. Only service animals may enter the buildings and the bonsai garden. Parking is around 25 USD per vehicle, and arriving on foot or by bike is free.
Flat, leashed-dog-friendly riverside paths and access points such as Hominy Creek and Bent Creek River Park, where dogs commonly wade and swim in calmer water. It is the closest thing to a dog beach in the mountains. Check the river flow after rain, as the current can strengthen quickly.
About forty minutes south, DuPont's Triple Falls and High Falls trails are a classic leashed-dog waterfall hike, familiar from film shoots in these forests. Wading and swimming are banned within 300 feet of the waterfalls for safety, so keep dogs on the trail near the falls. Arrive before 9am on weekends to find parking.
