Is Asheville really that dog-friendly?
Yes, it is regularly ranked among the most dog-friendly cities in the US. Leashed dogs are welcome on the Biltmore grounds, the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Arboretum trails and on brewery and restaurant patios across town, more so than in most comparable cities. The main limits are indoors and in the national park to the west.
What is the biggest mistake visitors make with a dog here?
Assuming they can hike with a dog in Great Smoky Mountains National Park an hour west. Dogs are banned on nearly all its trails, with fines up to 5,000 USD, and only two short trails allow them. Do your mountain hiking in the surrounding national forests and along the Blue Ridge Parkway instead, where leashed dogs are welcome.
Do I need to worry about bears and the weather?
Keep dogs leashed on trails: western North Carolina has thousands of black bears, and loose dogs are involved in most dog-bear encounters. On weather, Asheville sits at around 650 metres, so summers are milder than the lowland South but winters can be cold and icy, and higher trails colder still. Pack a coat for short-haired dogs and carry water on climbs.
Has Asheville recovered from Hurricane Helene?
The city is very much open and welcoming, but the French Broad riverfront took the worst of the September 2024 flooding, so the riverside dog parks are being rebuilt and parts of the River Arts District are still recovering.
