Albufeira is the Algarve's biggest beach resort (around 5 million annual visitors), a city of two faces, the cobbled medieval Cidade Velha and the high-rise resort strip of Areias de São João. Pick your hotel zone carefully, the season makes or breaks the dog experience.
April-May and October-early November are ideal, average highs 19-24 °C, all beaches reopen to leashed dogs in October, low season prices and no crowds. Avoid mid-June to mid-September: 32-38 °C heat, sand 50 °C+, all central beaches closed to dogs, Strip noise relentless.
For a dog-friendly stay choose Cidade Velha (medieval, walkable, calm at night), Olhos de Água (small fishing village, near Pine Cliffs trail), or Praia da Galé (resort hotels with garden). Avoid Areias de São João near the Strip, party noise from 22:00 to 04:00 most summer nights stresses dogs.
UK travellers to Albufeira (via Faro Airport) need a GB Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by an EU OV within 10 days of travel. Microchip + valid rabies vaccination at least 21 days before travel are mandatory. Tapeworm treatment only required on return travel if your home vet advises it for the destination route.
