Nerja, a whitewashed town of about 22,000 on the eastern Costa del Sol in Málaga province, grew from a Moorish farming village into one of Andalusia's most beloved seaside resorts, made famous by the 1980s Spanish TV series "Verano Azul" filmed on its beaches. Its centrepiece is the Balcón de Europa, a palm-lined promontory built on the ruins of a clifftop fortress, where the old town spills toward the Mediterranean in a tangle of narrow whitewashed lanes. For dog owners Nerja is relaxed and walkable: leashed dogs are welcome on terraces, the promenade and old-town streets, and the town opened two fenced municipal dog parks in late 2024. The two things to plan around are the Costa del Sol summer heat and the seasonal beach ban (1 June to 30 September), which sends dog owners to the year-round dog beach at nearby Torrox.
Nerja's iconic clifftop promontory and palm-lined promenade, built on the ruins of an old fortress where the old town meets the sea. Leashed dogs are welcome on the open paved esplanade and its sweeping Mediterranean viewpoints.
Nerja's signature warm-weather hike follows the bed of the Río Chíllar through a cool, shaded gorge with ankle- to knee-deep water, a natural refuge for dogs from the summer heat. Keep dogs leashed and bring water for the dry stretches.
A fully fenced municipal dog park beside the Parque Verano Azul in the heart of town, opened by Nerja town hall in December 2024 so dogs can run off-leash. A second fenced dog park sits next to the Ciudad Deportiva sports complex.
The closest official dog beach to Nerja, a small cove at the mouth of the Torrox river between the lighthouse and Playa El Peñoncillo, about 8 km west. It is the reliable year-round swimming option since Nerja's own beaches ban dogs in summer.
The 17th-century whitewashed church anchoring Nerja's old town, which fans out from the Balcón de Europa in a tangle of narrow lanes, plazas and tapas terraces. Leashed dogs are welcome to wander the pedestrian streets and most café terraces.
A vast prehistoric cave system 4 km east of town and one of Andalusia's most visited attractions, with a famous central chamber and ancient rock art. Dogs cannot go inside, so visit with a companion who can wait outside with your pet.
