Lisbon is one of Europe's oldest capitals. Founded by the Phoenicians and developed by the Romans as Olisipo, it became in the 15th century the nerve centre of the Portuguese Age of Discovery, the port from which Vasco da Gama and the fleets that connected Europe to Asia and the Americas set sail. The great earthquake of 1755, followed by a tsunami and fires, destroyed much of the medieval centre. The Marquis of Pombal rebuilt the Baixa on a grid, Europe's first planned modern city. Today Lisbon is a mild, sun-drenched city of hillside miradouros and terrace cafés, ideal for year-round pet travel.
Lisbon's green lung (10 km²) is the best place to let your dog run free in the city. Forest paths, picnic areas, dog play zones. Accessible by bus 723 from Marquês de Pombal.
The Belém neighbourhood, with its iconic Tower and Jerónimos Monastery, offers wide pedestrian riverside spaces perfect for a dog walk. The Tagus riverside gardens welcome dogs on leads.
The lanes of Alfama and viewpoints (miradouros) such as Miradouro da Graça or Santa Luzia are accessible to dogs. The climb is steep but the view over the Tagus from the top with your dog is one of the city's finest.
Chiado and Príncipe Real are central Lisbon's most dog-friendly neighbourhoods. Independent shops, markets, café terraces and vet pharmacies. The Jardim do Príncipe Real is a cool haven under its palm trees.
One of Lisbon's finest gardens, adjacent to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Dogs on leads are welcome. Pond, lawns and wide shaded paths, perfect for a midday break.
