Las Palmas

The city's famous 3 km golden-sand beach and its seafront promenade are completely off-limits to dogs year-round under the 2020 municipal ordinance, with fines from 120 to 1500 euros. It is still worth admiring from the inland streets, just not with a dog on the sand.

The pioneering official dog beach of the whole Canary Islands, at the mouth of the Barranco de Jinámar on the city's southern edge. Dogs can be off-leash in the marked zone, with a car park and beachfront restaurant nearby.

Vegueta's historic main square, guarded by eight bronze dog statues installed in 1895 and named after Canarian historical figures, a nod to one of the leading theories on the origin of the name Canarias. An open pedestrian square, easy with a leashed dog.

A 15th-century fort in a rose garden near the port, popular with local dog walkers for its open lawns and Atlantic views. The exterior grounds are dog-friendly on leash, the interior art foundation exhibition unconfirmed for pets.

The 15th-century founding quarter of the city, a compact grid of cobbled pedestrian streets and colonial balconies around the cathedral. Walking it on a leash costs nothing and covers most of the city's historic architecture in under an hour.

A palm-lined central park surrounded by terraces and hotels, home to a fenced pipican dog area with benches, a water fountain and simple play equipment. A relaxed, central base for a morning or evening walk.
