Benidorm was a quiet fishing village of a few hundred people until the 1950s, when mayor Pedro Zaragoza Orts pushed through a radical urban plan that let the town build upward instead of outward, packing tourist capacity onto a small stretch of coastline while keeping the beaches wide and open. The gamble worked spectacularly: within two decades cheap flights and package holidays from Britain and northern Europe turned Benidorm into Spain's densest skyline outside Madrid, with over 300 high-rises including some of Europe's tallest residential towers. The two arcing beaches, Levante and Poniente, anchor a town built almost entirely around tourism, wrapped by the whitewashed Canfali headland that survives from the original fishing village and the dramatic cliffs of the Serra Gelada to the north. Benidorm's reputation swings between package-holiday punchline and genuinely well-run resort city, but for a visitor with a dog the honest picture is mixed: the town invested early in fenced dog parks and kept its old quarter walkable, yet applies one of the strictest, least seasonal beach bans on the Spanish coast.
Benidorm's most photographed viewpoint, a white balustraded balcony on the Canfali headland between the two main beaches, free to visit with sweeping sea views. Leashed dogs are welcome throughout, with no restrictions.
The whitewashed old fishing quarter, a maze of narrow lanes and tiled plazas around the Church of San Jaime y Santa Ana, and the most walkable, atmospheric part of Benidorm for a dog, far removed from the high-rise strip.
A dramatic clifftop nature park with Europe's highest sea cliffs, stretching from Benidorm towards Albir. Leashed dogs can walk the flat, paved 5 km round-trip path to the Albir lighthouse, though there is almost no shade.
The largest of Benidorm's five official fenced dog parks, tucked behind Avenida Inglaterra along the palm-lined Parc de l'Aigüera gardens, right in the city centre. Free and open 09:00-23:00.
Benidorm's famous 2 km golden-sand beach lined with high-rise hotels. Dogs are banned from the sand year-round under the municipal ordinance, with fines from around 120 euros; walk past on the paved promenade instead.
The Costa Blanca's major theme park, spread across five themed zones. Dogs are not admitted anywhere inside, including queues, so book a day-care sitter through Rover or Gudog if a visit is on the itinerary.
