Dogs must be leashed on all public streets, the promenade and natural trails, and off-leash is only legal inside the two fenced municipal dog parks. Waste must be picked up, and the town's beaches are off-limits to dogs during the bathing season from 1 June to 30 September. Potentially dangerous breeds must be leashed and muzzled in public under Spanish law.
Heat & Paw Safety
Summer on the Costa del Sol is hot and pavement can burn paws by mid-morning. Walk dogs early or after sunset, test the ground with the back of your hand, and always carry water. The shaded, wet Río Chíllar walk is the coolest summer outing, while midday town strolls are best avoided.
Best Seasons
Spring and autumn are the sweet spot, with warm but manageable temperatures and quieter beaches where off-season dog tolerance is higher. Winter is mild and pleasant for walks. High summer is busy and hot, and the beach ban runs from 1 June to 30 September, so plan around the Torrox dog beach.
Must-Do with Your Dog
Walk the Balcón de Europa at golden hour, when the leashed promenade is at its most beautiful and your dog can take in the sea views. Then in summer cool off on the Río Chíllar river walk, the rare hot-weather hike where water and shade keep dogs comfortable the whole way.
