Alghero

Wall-top walk on the 16th-century ramparts and bastions that ring the old town facing the sea. A free, shaded stroll at sunset, with leashed dogs perfectly at home along this panoramic route.

A spectacular sea cave at the foot of Capo Caccia, reached by boat or the Escala del Cabirol stairway (654 steps). Dogs are not allowed inside the cave; leave yours with a companion outside, or enjoy the clifftops instead.

A limestone headland with sheer cliffs closing off the bay of Alghero, a haven for birds of prey and a sunset viewpoint. Open-air trails where leashed dogs are welcome; bring water, as shade is scarce.

A white-sand beach backed by a pine wood north of town, quieter than the big southern beaches. A dog-tolerated area exists within the pinewood zone; check local signs, as summer rules change each season.

One of the finest beaches nearby, with turquoise water and fine sand popular with surfers. Dogs are banned in the peak summer bathing season on this lifeguarded beach; off season, an early on-leash visit is tolerated.

A marina lined by a long, lively promenade between the old town and the harbour, dotted with terraces and coral shops. A pleasant on-leash stroll all year round, and most terraces tolerate dogs outside.
