Amalfi

A spectacular cathedral with a striped facade atop a grand staircase overlooking the main square. Leashed dogs can enjoy the piazza and steps, but the cathedral interior and the Cloister of Paradise do not admit pets; take turns for the visit.

A cool, shaded nature reserve of waterfalls, streams and old ironworks in the ravine above Amalfi. Leashed dogs are welcome on the trail, far cooler than the town in summer; a ticket for the upper reserve is bought at the Pontone information point.

A ruined watchtower on the spur between Amalfi and Atrani, reached by a short steep path from Pontone, with sweeping views over both bays. Leashed dogs welcome; the tower area is unfenced, so keep them close.

Amalfi's main pebble beach below the town, mostly divided into private lidos with a small free section. Dogs are generally not allowed on the lidos and are kept off in summer; the quieter Duoglio and Santa Croce coves are more tolerant off-season.

One of Italy's smallest villages, in the next bay a short flat walk from Amalfi, with a sheltered piazza and a maze of quiet lanes. An unspoilt spot, ideal for an on-leash stroll and a relaxed evening meal.

A refined garden town high above Amalfi, famous for the cliff-edge gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone. Leashed dogs welcome in the town; the garden villas generally admit leashed dogs, confirm at the gate. Ride up on the local orange bus.
