Vitoria-Gasteiz, capital of the Basque Autonomous Community, was born in the 12th century on an almond-shaped hill crowned to this day by the Gothic Cathedral of Santa María (13th-14th centuries). Its strategic position between Castile, Navarre and France made it a fortified commercial crossroads from the Middle Ages onward, and the medieval almendra preserves its original layout in concentric ovals named after craft guilds. In the 19th century the city became the capital of Álava under the Basque foral regime, and in 1980 the political capital of the entire Basque Autonomous Community. The major contemporary metamorphosis is environmental: Vitoria-Gasteiz was elected European Green Capital in 2012 for the creation of the Anillo Verde, a 30 km belt linking five large nature parks (Salburua, Olarizu, Zabalgana, Armentia, Zadorra). 256,000 inhabitants, the most dog-walkable urban green network in Spain, and a deeply Basque pintxos life in the Casco Medieval.
13th-14th century Gothic cathedral, designed as a fortress-church integrated into the city defences, famous for the Open for Works restoration programme visitable on paid guided tour (advance booking). Pets are not allowed inside, but the Plaza Burullería and the rampart path around the apse are dog-friendly.

One of Europe's largest urban wetlands, 3 km east of the centre, with deer herds, European mink and spoonbills viewable from the boardwalks. Leashed dogs on boardwalks (wildlife protection), signposted off-leash zone in the western half of the park.

The almond-shaped medieval old town climbs the hilltop in concentric ovals of cobbled streets (Herrería, Cuchillería, Zapatería, Correría), fully pedestrianised and open to leashed dogs. Murals, churches, pintxo bars throughout the loop.
