Dog-Friendly Restaurants in Trieste

Trieste's most historic buffet, in business since 1897 and a living monument to the city's Habsburg lunch culture. The signature dish is the piatto misto Pepi, a platter of boiled pork (porcina, prosciutto cotto in crosta, kaiserfleisch) with sauerkraut, mustard and grated horseradish. The small outdoor terrace on the pedestrianised side street welcomes leashed dogs and the staff bring water.

Founded in 1865 on the hill above Trieste, Suban is the iconic Slovenian-Italian frontier trattoria, four generations of the same family cooking jota (bean and sauerkraut soup), gnocchi di susine (plum dumplings), and beef on hot stone. The shaded garden terrace welcomes leashed dogs and is a Trieste institution for Sunday lunch. A 10-minute taxi from the centre.

Open since 1839, this is the most prestigious of Trieste's surviving Habsburg-era literary cafés, occupying the south corner of the Piazza Unità d'Italia with a vast outdoor terrace facing the sea. James Joyce, Italo Svevo and Umberto Saba were regulars. Leashed dogs are welcome at every outdoor table, where you can sip a capo in B (Trieste's signature espresso macchiato in a glass) with the largest seafront square in Europe at your feet.
