Getting Around Trieste with a Dog

Trieste Trasporti runs the city's urban bus network including the key lines 6 (centre to Miramare castle), 30 (centre to Barcola seafront and Bau Beach), and 8 (Karst plateau loop). Small dogs in carriers travel free; larger dogs travel leashed and muzzled for the price of a single passenger fare. Bus drivers are used to dogs and the policy is enforced uniformly across the network.

Trieste's regional airport at Ronchi dei Legionari (TRS) is served by Lufthansa, ITA Airways and Ryanair with year-round links to Rome, Munich, Frankfurt and seasonal European routes. The airport has a dedicated TS-TRS train station opened in 2018 with direct trains to Trieste Centrale (35 min, dogs allowed per Trenitalia rules) and Venice Mestre. APT bus E51 also links the airport to Trieste bus station every 30 min.

Trieste's grand 1878 Habsburg terminus at the head of the Borgo Teresiano is the main rail gateway, with Frecciarossa, Frecciargento and Intercity links to Venice, Milan, Rome and Naples, plus regional trains to Udine, Gorizia and the Slovenian border.
