Sydney is one of the world's most dog-friendly big cities, where a superb outdoor lifestyle of harbour dog beaches, huge off-leash parks and year-round terrace dining offsets strict zone-based beach rules and a public transport network that largely excludes pets. Top spots for pets include the off-leash lawns of Sydney Park and Centennial Parklands, the harbour dog beach at Rose Bay, and the clifftop Federation Cliff Walk, especially around the inner west around Alexandria and Leichhardt, the eastern suburbs from Rose Bay to Watsons Bay, and the harbourfront at Barangaroo.

Sydney grew from the 1788 penal colony at Sydney Cove into Australia's largest city, roughly 5.3 million people wrapped around one of the world's great natural harbours. Its sandstone headlands, ocean beaches and bushland reserves shape a famously outdoor way of life, and dogs are woven into it: harbourside dog beaches, huge council reserves, and a year-round terrace and beer-garden culture. Two local realities frame a visit with a dog. First, access is tightly zoned: the famous surf beaches (Bondi, Manly, Coogee) ban dogs, off-leash areas are marked by zone and hour, and National Parks land excludes pets. Second, public transport largely does too, so most owners get around by car or pet-friendly rideshare. The reward for planning around those rules is one of the most genuinely dog-friendly big cities anywhere, with excellent 24/7 emergency vets and a deep pet-care economy.
The largest off-leash area in the inner city, set on former brickworks hills in Alexandria, with wetlands, wide lawns and city views. The gathering point for inner-west dogs, morning and evening.
One of the world's great urban parks, with about 43 percent of its open space designated off-leash (Sandstone Ridge, Federation Valley). Dogs are kept out of the ponds, playgrounds and the area around the pavilion.
A calm harbour beach in the eastern suburbs where dogs are allowed off-leash at any time along the marked stretch between Dumaresq Reserve and Percival Park. One of the few all-hours dog beaches in Sydney.
A reconstructed sandstone headland on the western edge of the CBD, with a harbourfront walk and bridge views. Dogs are welcome on-leash throughout, and allowed in the water at the Marrinawi Cove swimming enclosure.
A clifftop path from Dover Heights toward Watsons Bay past the Macquarie Lighthouse, with sweeping ocean views and off-leash reserves (Raleigh Reserve, Lighthouse Reserve). Dogs are banned at the Gap Park and National Park end.
A harbourfront walk in the inner west, from Blackwattle Bay to Bicentennial Park, dotted with dog-friendly cafes. Leashed dogs on the path, with views of the Anzac Bridge and the bay.
