Sydney's coastline is world famous, but most of the marquee ocean beaches (Bondi, Manly, Coogee) do not allow dogs at all. The trick is knowing the dedicated dog beaches, most of which sit on the calmer harbour rather than the open surf. Rules are strict and often time-based, with rangers active in summer and fines from around AUD 220. The three below are the most reliable places to let a dog swim and run.
A calm harbour beach in the eastern suburbs where dogs are allowed off-leash at any time along the foreshore between Dumaresq Reserve and Percival Park. The sheltered water is gentle enough for confident swimmers, and the grassy foreshore is ideal for a run. One of the few all-hours off-leash beaches in Sydney.
Rules: Off-leash any time along the designated foreshore stretch. Pick up waste; watch for seaplanes using the bay.
A charming, sheltered little harbour beach just west of Taronga Zoo, backed by a large shaded grassy reserve. The calm, shallow water and quiet setting make it a favourite for families and dogs alike. Off-leash rules are generous on weekdays but restricted around the middle of the day on weekends.
Rules: Off-leash all day on weekdays. On weekends and public holidays off-leash only before 9am and after 4pm. On-leash otherwise.
The only ocean-facing dog beach in Sydney, a wide 3 km stretch of open sand in the south that high-energy dogs love. Because it faces the surf, off-leash access is tightly time-restricted and dogs are banned entirely outside those windows. Check the daylight-saving hours before you go.
Rules: Off-leash before 10am and after 4pm during daylight saving (before 10am and after 3pm outside daylight saving). No dogs at all outside these hours.
