Norderney

Norderney's main beach and the elegant promenade that runs above it, close to the town and its cafés. A roughly 500-metre dog beach lies along this stretch, just south of the old bath hall, so leashed dogs can share the sand and the sea breeze right in the heart of the resort.

The island's 54-metre red-and-white lighthouse, standing on a dune in the green interior and reached on foot or by bike. Dogs cannot climb the tower to the viewing platform, but the walk or ride out to it through the dunes on the lead is a lovely island outing in itself.

The island's oldest landmark, a tall white daymark on the western dunes that once guided ships and now marks a fine walking point with sweeping views over the beach and the North Sea. Leashed dogs are welcome on the surrounding paths and dunes.

The wild white dunes and broad beach on the island's eastern side, about 5 km from town and home to one of Norderney's dog beaches. It is the place to come for space, big skies and a proper leashed walk away from the resort crowds.

The UNESCO World Heritage tidal flats on the island's sheltered south side, part of the Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer national park, where guided mudflat walks set out at low tide. Dogs are welcome on the lead, but keep well clear of the marked bird-breeding zones, which are strictly protected.

The green heart of the resort, a landscaped park leading to the Napoleonschanze, a historic dune redoubt with a viewpoint over the island. Its sheltered paths make an easy, pretty leashed loop when the North Sea wind is up.

The historic spa quarter around the Kurplatz and Conversationshaus, all white 19th-century sea-bathing architecture, cafés and boutiques. Leashed dogs are a common sight along the pedestrian streets and the Milchbar terrace above the beach.
