Warnemünde began as a small fishing village at the mouth of the Warnow, granted to the city of Rostock in 1323 to secure its access to the Baltic. For centuries it stayed a village of fishermen and pilots, until the 19th century turned it into one of Germany's earliest seaside resorts: the railway arrived in 1886, grand villas and hotels rose behind the beach, and the white lighthouse was lit in 1898. The Alter Strom, the original harbour channel, still lines up the fishing cutters and gabled captains' houses that give the town its postcard face. In the GDR era Warnemünde became a workers' holiday resort and gained the striking Teepott pavilion; today it is Rostock's seaside district and a major Baltic cruise port. For dogs, the legacy is a huge beach, a walkable harbour and miles of coastal forest, all a short S-Bahn ride from the city.
The white 1898 lighthouse, Warnemünde's emblem, where the promenade meets the beach. You cannot take a dog up the tower, but the base and surrounding plaza, both free, give the best views over the beach and harbour.
The shell-roofed pavilion beside the lighthouse is one of the coast's best-known pieces of modern architecture. Dogs cannot go inside the venues, but the building and its seafront plaza can be seen on the lead.
The old harbour channel at the heart of Warnemünde, where fishing cutters moor in front of gabled houses, cafés and Fischbrötchen kiosks. Walking it on the lead is the essential Warnemünde experience.
The flat seafront promenade leads out to the Westmole, the long pier at the harbour mouth. A breezy, scenic leashed walk, perfect for watching ferries and cruise ships come and go.
A wooded cliff coast rising to 25 metres just west of town, an 83-hectare nature reserve with forest paths and sea views. Dogs on the lead; a cool, shaded alternative to the beach.
One of Germany's largest coastal forests, east across the little Warnow ferry, with flat, shaded tracks down to the quiet Markgrafenheide beach. Dogs on the lead, with space and cool air.
