Bayreuth owes its face to a woman and a composer. Margravine Wilhelmine, sister of Frederick the Great, turned the Franconian town into a little Versailles in the 18th century: the Margravial Opera House (1748), now UNESCO-listed as Europe's best-preserved court theatre, the New Palace, the Hofgarten and the Eremitage park with its grottos and water games. A century later Richard Wagner chose the town for his Festspielhaus (1876) on the Green Hill, where the Wagner festival has drawn the world's opera faithful every summer for 150 years from late July. A city of around 75,000, Bayreuth stays dog-sized: margravial gardens on a leash (120 cm maximum), the Wilhelminenaue meadows along the Roter Main with official dog-waste stations, welcoming beer gardens and a pedestrian old town. Book far ahead during the Festspiele, from 25 July to the end of August.
Wagner's festival theatre of 1876 on the Green Hill. Dogs are barred from the hall, but the terraced park below the facade is a fine leashed walk, spectacular on performance afternoons.
The 1748 baroque opera house, UNESCO World Heritage and Europe's best-preserved court theatre. Dogs stay outside; the facade launches the old-town pedestrian loop.
The court garden behind the New Palace, canals and swan islands, next to Wagner's Villa Wahnfried. Dogs admitted on a leash of 120 cm maximum, the Bavarian palace-garden rule.
Wilhelmine's pleasure park 4 km from the center: grottos, the gilded sun temple and water games at set hours in summer. Ideal shaded leash loops (120 cm), beer garden at the gates.
The big Roter Main river park, legacy of the 2016 garden show, with the city's official dog-waste stations at its entrances. Bayreuth's most generous dog-walking space.
The Maisel brewery's craft flagship: 21 taps, wood-fired burgers and a big outdoor area where dogs are expressly welcome, bowls provided.
