The beach may be off-limits, but much of what makes Maspalomas special is open-air and easy with a leashed dog, from the landmark lighthouse and its boardwalk to the birdlife of La Charca and the long seafront promenade at Meloneras. The one thing to respect is the protected dunes and lagoon, where dogs must stay on the marked paths and out of the reserve itself.
The 19th-century lighthouse at the island's southern tip is the area's landmark, and the surrounding Boulevard El Faro is an open-air promenade of shops and terrace cafes running to the sea.
